4-month

old domain when it reached #1

Answermaniac understood early that SEO for a deep-tech cybersecurity company cannot be generic. In our first three months, they built the technical foundation we needed and helped us think strategically about how our content should be structured. What I value most is their honesty: they tell us what is realistic, not just what is easy to promise.
Raíssa Oliveira Soares, Product Marketing Manager, 8Layers

Identity security posture management (ISPM). Madrid, pre-seed. One shared identity data layer powering three products: Octagon (ISPM), Thor (identity threat detection and response, ITDR) and Compass (continuous compliance). Buyers are security and identity teams in the US and Europe — a crowded, technical category with well-funded incumbents ranking for every head term.

The starting position

When the engagement began, 8Layers was effectively invisible outside its own brand name. Search Console showed strong performance for “8layers” and almost nothing for the category it sells into — identity security posture management, ITDR and identity posture returned no clicks and barely any impressions. In AI answers, where technical buyers increasingly start, the platform wasn't mentioned at all when someone asked which ISPM tools to consider.

We said the hard parts out loud at the start, not after.

Three things made this hard

  • The domain was young. A four-month-old site doesn't out-authority incumbents on head terms in a quarter — ISPM and ITDR are a six-to-twelve-month build, not a fast win.
  • The category is contested by vendors with far more domain history and backlinks.
  • The product spans two buying surfaces: posture (ISPM) and detection (ITDR) are different searches by different buyers, so the content had to serve both without diluting either.

Every figure is a dated snapshot from the client's own Search Console and from dated AI-answer screenshots. Positions 60 to 95 are an early signal — impressions without clicks, not a top-of-page ranking. We flag that difference on purpose.

What we did

We ran our ANSWER method — Audit, Navigate, Structure, Write, Earn, Refine. The first three are foundation work done once; the last three are the ongoing cycle.

Foundation first. We audited the live site and Search Console, mapped where 8Layers actually had a chance to rank, and set honest expectations: long-tail and AI citations are winnable fast on a young domain, head terms are a longer play. We didn't chase vanity keywords the domain couldn't hold.

Content built to be cited by AI, not just ranked by Google. Every post leads with a direct-answer block, uses question-style headings, and closes with an FAQ — the structure answer engines extract and cite. And every statistic was checked to its primary source (Microsoft, Palo Alto Unit 42, Vectra, Sophos), not a secondary blog; when a stat couldn't be verified, it came out.

The topical cluster we built

  • A pillar-and-spoke structure anchored on ISPM, with exact-match internal links tying 20+ posts together.
  • The ISPM pillar and the “8 pillars” framework; ISPM vs ITDR vs IGA; and ISPM vs CSPM.
  • Machine identity, AI agent identity, and service account security.
  • A full non-human identity cluster — each post shipped with matching on-brand infographics.

The result that matters

Search “best ISPM software 2026” and Google's AI Overview opens with “The top-rated Identity Security Posture Management (ISPM) software in 2026 is 8Layers”, then lists 8Layers first under Top ISPM Software Solutions — ahead of Silverfort, Saviynt, Nudge Security, Permiso and CrowdStrike. AI search returns the same order: 1. 8Layers, 2. Silverfort, 3. Saviynt, 4. CrowdStrike, 5. Permiso, 6. Microsoft.

At baseline, 8Layers wasn't mentioned at all. For a four-month-old domain in a contested category, being the name the engines put first is the result that compounds — that recommendation reaches a buyer before any blue link does.

The honest read

We don't claim 8Layers ranks on page one of Google for ISPM or ITDR. It doesn't yet, and on a domain this young in this category, that was never the ninety-day promise.

What this does and doesn't show

  • A real #1 recommendation in AI answers for the exact category query buyers ask — not a page-one Google ranking for the head terms.
  • Doubled organic clicks and tripled impressions, with category terms moving from invisible to indexed at positions 60–95 — an early signal, not a ranking.
  • Head-term rankings for ISPM and ITDR are the next phase. They're a build, not a switch.
  • Figures are self-reported from the client's Search Console and manual AI-answer checks on specific dates and prompts; AI answers can change as engines update.

Method note

Results are self-reported from the client's Google Search Console and from manual checks of AI answers on specific dates and prompts. Search figures compare the last three months to the previous three months. AI-answer results are dated snapshots for named queries in English and can change as engines update.

Positions 60 to 95 reflect impressions earned, not clicks or page-one rankings. We guarantee agreed implementation and transparent measurement — not rankings, citations, leads or revenue. We show real data, not mockups.
