HR software is one of the most searched B2B software categories. Every company with employees needs HR and payroll tools. When an HR director asks ChatGPT "What HRIS should I use for a 200-person company?" the AI recommends 3-5 specific platforms. BambooHR and Rippling show up frequently. Dozens of other HRIS vendors do not show up at all.
We tested 25+ HR and payroll software queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude in April 2026. The results reveal a market segmented by company size and HR function. Broad HRIS queries are competitive, but function-specific and industry-specific HR queries are wide open.
The HR tech market exceeds $35B globally. HR leaders are increasingly using AI for vendor evaluation -- a natural extension of using AI for policy research, compliance questions, and employee communications. AI-referred HR software traffic converts at rates well above Google organic because HR buyers using AI have already defined their requirements.

Industry-specific HR queries are the most underserved -- healthcare, manufacturing, and nonprofit HR software queries return generic results.
Perplexity recommendations: HR software
| Query | Products Recommended | Sources Cited |
|---|---|---|
| "best HR software 2026" | BambooHR, Gusto, Rippling, Paylocity, Workday | G2, Capterra, Forbes Advisor, PCMag |

| "Gusto vs Rippling" | Both (detailed comparison) | G2, Capterra, vendor comparison pages |
Pattern: Perplexity cites Forbes Advisor and PCMag heavily for HR software -- these publications publish annual "best HR software" roundups that Perplexity treats as authoritative. HR tech companies featured in these roundups get a citation boost.
Where mid-market HR tech companies can win
Industry-specific HR queries
Healthcare HR, manufacturing HR, nonprofit HR, restaurant HR, construction HR -- each industry has unique HR requirements (shift scheduling, compliance, union management, seasonal hiring). No HRIS vendor has created industry-specific content for most of these verticals. The first vendor to publish "HR Software for [Industry]" pages owns those citations.
Compliance-specific queries
Multi-state payroll compliance, ACA reporting, FMLA tracking, I-9 verification, EEO reporting. HR compliance queries are growing as regulations increase. Most HRIS vendors mention compliance as a feature but do not have dedicated compliance content that AI can cite.
The Rippling playbook
Rippling is the fastest-growing HR tech company in AI citations. Their strategy: aggressive comparison content ("[Rippling] vs [Every Competitor]"), function-specific landing pages, and frequent content updates. Any HR tech company can replicate this approach for their specific segment.
How to get cited
Create industry-specific pages. "HR Software for Healthcare," "Payroll for Manufacturing," "HRIS for Nonprofits." Include industry-specific compliance requirements, workflow examples, and customer data.
Publish comparison content. "[Your Platform] vs BambooHR," "[Your Platform] vs Rippling," "[Your Platform] vs Gusto." Feature-by-feature comparison tables with honest assessments.
Target function-specific queries. If your platform excels at a specific HR function (recruiting, performance, benefits, compliance), create dedicated content for that function.
Implement schema markup. Article, Product, and FAQPage schema on all product pages. See: Schema Markup for AI
Get featured in roundup publications. Forbes Advisor, PCMag, and G2 "Best Of" lists are heavily cited by Perplexity and Gemini.
