Search surfaces
Google AI Mode
Google's dedicated conversational AI search tab, distinct from the inline AI Overview.
Google AI Mode is a dedicated, conversational search experience — a full AI answer interface you enter deliberately, as opposed to the AI Overview that appears inline above normal results. It supports follow-up questions that carry context, and it leans more heavily on query fan-out, breaking one question into many and merging the results.
AI Mode matters because it pushes Google further toward answer-first search, where the written response and its citations are the whole experience and the ten blue links recede. Visibility there depends on being citable across the many sub-queries a single question fans out into, not just the original phrasing.
Optimising for AI Mode is less about one keyword and more about covering a topic thoroughly enough that your pages surface across the related sub-questions the engine generates on the fly.
