Query Fan-Out
One query becomes many: the engine splits your question, searches in parallel, and merges one answer.
Query fan-out is when an engine takes a single question, generates several related sub-queries from it, searches for each in parallel, and then merges the results into one answer. Google's AI Mode and other conversational engines rely on it to cover a question thoroughly rather than answering only its literal phrasing.
Fan-out changes optimisation from one keyword to a web of related questions. To be present in the merged answer, your content needs to be citable across the sub-queries the engine invents, not just the original query. Breadth and depth on a topic beat a single exact-match page.
The way to win is to map the realistic sub-questions around your core query — comparisons, use cases, requirements, alternatives — and cover each with its own clear, citable passage.
