Generative Engine Optimization(GEO)

Optimizing to be cited inside AI-generated answers, not ranked in blue links.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your content the source an AI answer quotes and attributes. The target is no longer position one on a results page; it is being one of the handful of sources a model like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews pulls from when it writes an answer. If the engine names you or links your page, you win. If it writes the answer without you, you are invisible, no matter how well you rank organically.

GEO overlaps with SEO but weights the signals differently. Crawlability and clean HTML still matter, but so do things classic SEO ignores: whether a passage can be lifted and still make sense on its own, whether your brand is a clearly resolved entity, and whether third-party sources corroborate what your own pages claim. Models prefer sources they can verify against other sources, so off-page presence often moves AI visibility faster than another blog post on your own domain.

The practical GEO workflow is to decide which buyer questions matter, check which sources the engines currently cite for them, and then close the gap — with answer-first content, structured data, entity cleanup and genuine third-party coverage. Because AI answers are non-deterministic, GEO is measured as a rate over many runs, not a single ranking.

Frequently asked

Is GEO different from SEO?

They overlap, but GEO optimizes to be cited inside an AI answer rather than to rank a link. It leans harder on entity clarity, extractable passages and third-party corroboration than classic SEO does.
