AI Visibility Rate

Written and reviewed by Faizan Babar·Co-Founder, AnswerManiac·Updated October 2026

The share of applicable buyer queries where an AI engine names or cites you.

AI visibility rate is the percentage of applicable buyer-intent queries where an AI engine names or cites you, averaged across the engines you track. If 100 category queries apply to you and Perplexity names you in 20 of them, your Perplexity visibility rate is 20%; average that with your other engines for an overall rate. It is a rate, not a raw count, because a count of 40 citations means something completely different in a 300-query category than in a 20-query one.

The metric normalises for opportunity, which lets you compare a fintech vendor to an MSP vendor fairly and track your own progress honestly over time. It also forces you to separate engines — in practice a brand's Perplexity rate and ChatGPT rate are often very different, and a blended count hides that.

To measure it, build a stable set of unbranded queries, run each through each engine multiple times, record a hit or miss, and divide hits by applicable queries. Re-run monthly and watch the trend rather than any single snapshot.

Frequently asked

Why use a rate instead of a citation count?

A raw count hides the denominator. Twenty citations out of thirty applicable queries is dominance; twenty out of four hundred is noise. A rate ties the number to the opportunity, so it compares fairly across categories and over time.
